DJ TJ: How it All Started

Tai Jasper, born on October 30th, 1997, was raised in Long Island, New York. Music has impacted both her and her family in a major way with her father being a songwriter, and her uncle, being a member of a well known R&B group Groove Theory, as well an actor and producer. Groove Theory is known for their hit record, “Tell Me.”

At the age of twelve, she was introduced to a djay program for macs that allows you to do simple mixing. From then on, she became very interested with the program and eventually taught herself how to dj. With the help of her father, she purchased her first set of turntables booked her first gig at thirteen years old. Then, she discovered her stage name DJ TJ.

With time to perfect her skill and passion, by the age of 17, TJ had an impressive number of clients who hired her for private events such as baby showers, sweet sixteens, birthday parties, wedding receptions, and more. She has been the source of sound for Holy Trinity High School’s homecoming for the past two years, as well as other events held by the school. She has collaborated with many organizations to promote their brand. For example, she teamed up with independent music label Green Sofa Music and appeared at their annual music festival for the past two years.

During her freshman year SUNY New Paltz, Tai made many strides to improve her career as a DJ and make a name for herself at her school. She gained a spot on her college’s radio, in which she is currently working towards her third semester with her own show. TJ has also gained exposure in the New Paltz party scene performing at private events and local clubs. During school, she was offered an opportunity to DJ Brooklyn’s very own Nike Rose Classic Girl’s Basketball Tournament. This meant she would leave school for the weekend to DJ the tournament. TJ competed in a DJ battle hosted by her school in which she won third place. Considering her hectic schedule, Tai was still able to maintain a spot on the Dean’s List at her school.

During the summer of 2016, TJ was offered an opportunity to DJ the LES Express basketball tournament in Manhattan, as well as an opportunity to perform at Hoops in the Sun, a very well known tournament in the Bronx. She has made club appearances including Woodland NYC in Brooklyn, La Nueva Estrella in the Bronx, and Genesis in Hauppauge, Long Island. Tai also has shown an incredible work ethic tacking on two other jobs alongside her first priority as a DJ. She is a counselor at a camp located in Long Island as well as an employee of the major franchise Baskin Robbins.

With all her achievements, Tai Jasper still intends to finish school with a solid degree and make more strides to better her career. DJ TJ has dreams of becoming not only a famous DJ, but stepping foot into all aspects of the entertainment business.
